mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
(Bg. 6.47)
"To meditate means to engage the mind
in thinking of the form of the Lord, of the qualities of the Lord,
of the activities of the Lord, and of the service of the Lord. Meditation
does not mean anything impersonal or void. According to Vedic literature,
meditation is always on the form of Vishnu. In the Nrisimha Purana
there is a statement about meditation on the form of the Lord. It
is said there, 'Meditation focusing on the lotus feet of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead has been accepted as transcendental and beyond
the experience of material pain and pleasure. By such meditation,
even one who is grossly miscreant can be delivered from the sinful
reactions of his life.'"
(Vishnujana Swami, föredrag, Nectar of Devotion, Mayapura,
Indien 1975-04-03)
This verse clearly explains how one has
to meditate on the form of the Lord. Impersonal meditation is a
bogus invention of modern days. In none of the Vedic literatures
is impersonal meditation recommended. In Bhagavad-gita, when
meditation is recommended, the word mat-parah, which means
"pertaining to Me," is used. Any Vishnu form pertains
to Lord Krishna because Lord Krishna is the original Vishnu form.
Sometimes someone tries to meditate upon the impersonal Brahman,
which is described in Bhagavad-gita as avyakta,
meaning "unmanifested" or "impersonal." But
it is remarked by the Lord Himself that those who are attached to
this impersonal feature of the Lord suffer a very troublesome task
because no one can concentrate on the impersonal feature. One has
to concentrate on the form of the Lord, which is described here
in connection with Dhruva Maharaja's meditation. As will be apparent
from later descriptions, Dhruva Maharaja perfected this kind of
meditation, and his yoga was successful.
(Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Shrimad-Bhagavatam 4.8.45,
innebörd)
Then dharana, meditation. And what is that meditation? That meditation... Here it is recommended, tad-vicestitam: "meditation on the activities of the Supreme Lord." If the Supreme Lord is impersonal, then where is the question of activities? And how you can concentrate your mind something impersonal? Bhagavad-gita says that klesah adhikataras tesam avyaktasakta-cetasam: "Those who are trying to meditate on the impersonal feature, impersonal feature, their process is very troublesome." Kleso 'dhikatarah. Adhikatara means greater. Any spiritual realization, without painstaking, without accepting some voluntary trouble... And nobody can very easily..., eating, drinking, merrying. No, that will... That is not spiritual advancement. One has to accept voluntarily some principles. That is called tapasya. So dhyana. Dhyana means meditation. So that dhyana.
Then dharana. Dharana means meditating, then the subject matter will be fixed up in your heart. It will not move. Not that every day I am meditating on some new subject, no. The meditation is vishnu-murti. Actually those who are yogis, they meditate on the four-handed vishnu-murti. Mat-parah. In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, mat-parah: "unto Me," either Krishna or Vishnu. That is meditation. Dhyana, dharana. And one, when one is practiced meditating, first beginning from the lotus feet... These things are all explained in the Bhagavata, Srimad-Bhagavata, Bhagavad-gita. Then gradually, when you are practiced to think of Krishna´s lotus feet or Vishnu´s lotus feet, then you proceed - then the thighs, then the waist, then the chest, then the mouth, I mean to, face, then... In this way, one after another, one after another, you have to meditate. In this way, when your meditation is fixed up, that is called dharana. Dharana. It is not moving. Dhyana, dharana.

Smartavyah satatam visnuh vismartavyo na jatucit. This is the process. You have to remember always Krishna, Vishnu. That is called meditation. That is called samadhi.
The samadhi, the meditation which is going on, some rascaldom, that is not meditation. Meditation means always thinking of Vishnu. That is meditation. So this Krishna consciousness is perfect meditation. Always thinking. And it is certified in Bhagavad-gita, yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantaratmana [Bg. 6.47]. Mad-gatenantaratmana sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yuktatamo matah. So Krishna said, he is first-class yogi who is constantly in Krishna consciousness. Sraddhavan bhajate yo mam. With faith and devotion, always remembering Krishna, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, sa me yuktatamo matah. Yoginam api sarvesam, of all the yogis. They have opened so many classes of yoga class, somebody is advertising that you can remain young, you can have better sex power or you can reduce your bodily fat. So that is also possible. That you can do by ordinary exercise. But real purpose of yoga is to concentrate the mind on Vishnu always. That is yoga. That is Krishna consciousness. So Krishna consciousness is the highest perfectional stage of yoga practice.
